Washington Huskies Football: 2023 Roster Preview

Quarterbacks

The Huskies will be led by senior quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in 2023. Penix Jr. transferred to Washington from Indiana in 2022 and had a breakout season, throwing for 4,641 yards and 32 touchdowns. He is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the Pac-12 and will be a key part of the Huskies' offense in 2023.

Backing up Penix Jr. will be sophomore quarterback Sam Huard. Huard was a highly-touted recruit coming out of high school and is expected to compete for the starting job in 2024. He saw limited action in 2022, but he showed flashes of his potential.

Running Backs

The Huskies have a talented group of running backs in 2023. Junior running back Cameron Davis is the leading returning rusher from 2022, and he is expected to be the starter again in 2023. Davis is a physical runner who is also a good receiver out of the backfield.

Sophomore running back Richard Newton is another player to watch in 2023. Newton had a breakout season in 2022, rushing for 700 yards and seven touchdowns. He is a shifty runner who is difficult to tackle.

The Huskies also have a number of other talented running backs on the roster, including senior Julius Irvin and sophomore Caleb Berry. These players will provide depth and competition to the running back position in 2023.
