Meteor Showers Set to Peak This Week

Delta Aquarids and Alpha Capricornids Reach Peak Around July 31

Southern Delta Aquarids Active from July 12 to Aug. 15, Alpha Capricornids from July 3 to Aug. 15

Two meteor showers are set to peak this week, offering skywatchers a chance to witness high-speed meteors and bright fireballs. The Southern Delta Aquarids will be active from July 12 to Aug. 15, while the Alpha Capricornids will be active from July 3 to Aug. 15.

Both showers will reach their peak around July 31, when observers can expect to see up to 20 meteors per hour. While neither shower ranks among the very best showers of the year, taken together they can provide a nice display.

The Delta Aquarids are known for their speed, traveling at up to 41 miles per second. They are also known for producing bright fireballs, which are larger and brighter than average meteors.

The Alpha Capricornids are a less active shower, but they can still produce some nice meteors. They are known for their long, graceful trails.

To best view the meteor showers, find a dark location away from city lights. Lie down on a blanket or chair and look up at the sky. Be patient, as it may take some time to see a meteor.
