History of Rwanda: A Journey Through Time
Early History and Colonial Era
Rwanda's history dates back to the 18th century, when the Tutsi people migrated to the region from the Ethiopian highlands. They established a monarchy and ruled over the Hutu and Twa people. In the 19th century, Rwanda became a German colony, followed by Belgian rule from 1916 to 1962.
Independence and Conflict
Rwanda gained independence in 1962, but the country soon descended into ethnic conflict. In 1994, a genocide perpetrated by the Hutu majority against the Tutsi minority resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. The genocide marked a dark chapter in Rwanda's history.
Post-Genocide Recovery
In the aftermath of the genocide, Rwanda embarked on a remarkable journey of reconciliation and recovery. The country established a new constitution and elected Paul Kagame as president in 2000. Kagame has led Rwanda into a period of economic growth and stability.
